Markets crash, many hurt

Witnesses described how the markets "just dropped". Oops, I think I got my stories mixed up, it was actually a British Airways 777 plane that crashed on landing at London's Heathrow airport, injuring 11 people. But other headlines are just as bad:

  • U.S. Stocks Tumble for Third Day on Conviction Recession Is Now Under Way
  • Bernanke tries to spin the markets into rallying, to no avail
  • MBIA, Ambac Slump, Default Risk Soars on Concern About Loss of AAA Ratings
  • Fishman's Sailfish Credit Hedge Fund Loses Half Its Assets, Investors Say
  • U.S. Housing Starts Drop More Than Forecast; Manufacturing Gauge Tumbles
  • Lehman Brothers Will Eliminate 1,300 Jobs at Aurora Mortgage-Lending Unit

William Hamilton

Wall Street's graveyards are filled with men who were right too soon.

Jesse Livermore says...

"It isn't as important to buy as cheap as possible as it is to buy at the right time."
"I can calculate the motions of the heavenly bodies, but not the madness of the people." - Sir Isaac Newton

Gary, Sir Isaac needs ya!

Sir Isaac Newton, widely regarded as the world's smartest man at the time, regarding the South Sea Bubble of 1720. Newton, after selling his South Sea shares and making a profit of GBP 7,000 (a 100% profit), bought in again (adding even more capital) just before the crash and lost GBP 20,000. Amen.
